GitHub Copilot vs Claude Code (Oct 2026)

Short answer: Copilot Pro is $10 a month and includes Claude Opus 5.5, plus GPT, Gemini and Grok models, billed against a monthly budget of AI credits. Claude Code starts at $20 with Claude models only, but its limits reset every five hours instead of once a month. Choose Copilot if you mostly code in your editor, want unlimited completions, use several models, or are buying for a team. Choose Claude Code if you run long agent sessions every day and Claude is the only model you need.

GitHub says flex allotments "may change over time," so the credit totals above can move. Claude lists Max as "from $100" without a separate Max 20x price, so we don't list one.

The real question: $10 of credits or $20 of five-hour windows?

Copilot Pro's 1,500 credits are worth $15 of usage at GitHub's own rate, and they last all month. A short question to a light model costs a fraction of a credit; GitHub says a long agent session on a frontier model across many files costs more. So if you use Claude Opus in agent mode for hours a day, expect to run through Pro's credits and either pay overage or move up to Pro+ ($39, 7,000 credits).

Claude Pro works the other way. You don't see a dollar meter; you hit a limit, wait for the five-hour window to roll over, and keep going, up to a weekly cap. That suits people who code in bursts every day. Neither company publishes how many Opus agent turns you actually get, so the honest test is one week of your normal work on each.

Rule of thumb: mostly completions and quick chats in the editor, pick Copilot Pro and save $10. Several long Claude agent sessions a day, Claude Pro, or Max if you keep hitting the five-hour wall.

What a team of 5 pays

Heavy coder on the teamDraws more from the shared pool; extra usage $0.01 per credit if an admin allows itGive that person a Premium seat: +$80/mo annual ($100 vs $20)

Copilot Business has one published price per seat. Pooling helps teams where a few people use AI heavily and the rest lightly. Claude Team's per-seat limits are simpler to predict but don't share across people.

Where Copilot wins

  • Half the entry price, and a real free tier. Pro is $10; Free is $0 with 2,000 completions a month. Claude Code starts at $20.
  • Unlimited completions. Tab completions and next edit suggestions don't touch your credits on any paid plan. Claude Code doesn't do inline completions at all.
  • Every major model in one plan. Claude, GPT, Gemini and Grok models side by side, so you can use a cheap model for easy work and save credits for Opus.
  • Built into GitHub. Assign an issue and the cloud agent opens a pull request; Copilot reviews PRs; you can even send a task to Anthropic's Claude agent from GitHub, billed to your Copilot plan.
  • Cheaper, pooled team seats. $19 per seat with credits shared across the org, and no training on Business data.

Where Claude Code wins

  • Built for long agent sessions. Limits reset every five hours instead of monthly, so a heavy day doesn't burn next week's budget.
  • The newest Claude models in the agent. Claude Code runs Anthropic's current models. Copilot's Claude cloud agent lists Opus 5 and Sonnet 5 but not Opus 5.5.
  • Terminal-first. It lives in your shell and works with any editor. Copilot has a CLI too, but its center of gravity is the IDE and GitHub.
  • Max includes API credits. $100 or $200 a month in Claude Platform credits if you also build on the API.
  • Annual discount. Claude Pro is $17/mo billed annually.

Verdict: who should pick which

Pick GitHub Copilot if…

  • You spend most of your day in VS Code, JetBrains or Xcode and want completions plus chat.
  • You want to try Claude Opus without paying $20, or switch between Claude, GPT and Gemini.
  • Your team lives on GitHub and wants agents and PR review there, at $19 a seat.

Pick Claude Code if…

  • You hand big, multi-step tasks to an agent every day and would burn through a monthly credit budget.
  • You work in the terminal, or want one agent across any editor.
  • You already pay for Claude Pro or Max: Claude Code is included.

Honest caveat: many developers end up with both: Copilot Pro for completions and reviews, Claude Pro for agent work, $30 a month total. Both read AGENTS.md, so one instruction file can serve both. FAQ

Is GitHub Copilot or Claude Code cheaper?

Copilot is cheaper to start: Copilot Free is $0 and Copilot Pro is $10/month, while Claude Code needs Claude Pro at $20/month ($17/month billed annually). For teams, Copilot Business is $19 per seat versus $20 (annual) or $25 (monthly) for a Claude Team standard seat. What you get for the money works differently, though: Copilot Pro includes 1,500 AI credits a month (1 credit = $0.01), while Claude Pro gives usage limits that reset every five hours plus a weekly cap.

Can I use Claude models in GitHub Copilot?

Yes. GitHub's plans page lists Claude Opus 5.5, Sonnet 5.5, Haiku 5.5 and Fable 5.1 on Copilot Pro, Pro+ and Max. They draw from your monthly AI credits at a rate that depends on the model and the number of tokens, so heavy Opus use spends credits faster than lighter models. Copilot Free only offers auto model selection.

Is the Claude agent in Copilot the same as Claude Code?

No. Copilot's Anthropic Claude coding agent (public preview) is built on the Claude Agent SDK and runs asynchronously on GitHub: you assign it an issue or prompt and it opens a pull request. It's available on Copilot Pro, Pro+, Business and Enterprise, uses your Copilot AI credits plus GitHub Actions minutes, and its model list (Sonnet 4.6, Sonnet 5, Opus 4.8, Opus 5, Fable 5.1) doesn't include Opus 5.5. Claude Code is Anthropic's interactive agent for your terminal, IDE, desktop and the web.

What happens when I run out of usage?

In Copilot, your AI credits reset monthly. Until then you can set a dollar budget and keep going at $0.01 per credit, or switch to a cheaper model. Code completions and next edit suggestions don't use credits and stay unlimited on paid plans. In Claude Code, limits reset on a rolling five-hour window with a weekly cap, and you can wait, upgrade to Max, or turn on usage credits at API rates.

Does Claude Code have a free plan?

No. Claude Code isn't on Claude Free; it starts with Claude Pro at $20/month, or pay-as-you-go API usage through an Anthropic Console account. GitHub Copilot Free is $0 with limited chat and agent usage, 2,000 completions a month, the Copilot CLI and auto model selection. Verified students get Copilot Student free.

Which is better for a team of 5?

On price, Copilot Business: 5 seats cost $95/month, and each seat adds 1,900 AI credits to a pool the whole org shares. Claude Team costs $125/month for 5 standard seats on monthly billing or $100/month billed annually. GitHub also says it doesn't use Copilot Business or Enterprise data to train its models. Pick Claude Team if your developers want Claude Code's interactive agent and are fine with five-hour limits.

Can I use both?

Yes, and many developers do: Copilot for unlimited completions and pull request review inside the editor, Claude Code for long agent sessions. That's $30/month on Copilot Pro plus Claude Pro. Claude Code's VS Code extension runs alongside Copilot, and both can read repository instruction files (Copilot uses copilot-instructions.md and AGENTS.md; Claude Code uses CLAUDE.md or an existing AGENTS.md).
