Claude Code vs OpenAI Codex (Oct 2026)

Short answer: Anthropic and OpenAI now charge the same price ladder for their coding agents: $20 to start, $100 for heavy use, and $20 or $100 per team seat. So pick on models and limits, not price. Choose Claude Code if Claude Opus and Sonnet are the models you trust, or if you'd use Max's included API credits. Choose Codex if you want to start free or at $8, want no five-hour cap at $100+, or want automatic GitHub code review and cloud tasks built into your $20 plan.

Claude lists Max as "from $100" without a separate Max 20x price, so we don't list one. OpenAI says Pro $200 includes more usage than Pro $100 but doesn't publish exact multiples on its pricing page, so we don't either.

What a team of 5 pays

Claude TeamChatGPT Business
5 standard seats, monthly billing$125/mo$125/mo
5 standard seats, annual billing$100/mo ($1,200/yr)$100/mo ($1,200/yr)
4 standard + 1 premium (annual)$180/mo$180/mo

Same money either way. The real cost difference shows up in overage: Claude bills extra usage at API rates, and ChatGPT Business bills it as workspace credits. ChatGPT Business can also add Codex-only seats with no fixed fee for occasional coders.

Where Claude Code wins

  • Claude models at a flat price. Opus, Sonnet and Haiku are all in plan usage from $20. If Claude is your preferred coding model, this is the cheapest way to get it.
  • Max includes API credits. Max adds $100 or $200 a month in Claude Platform credits, useful if you also build on the API.
  • Annual discount for individuals. Pro drops to $17/mo billed annually; ChatGPT Plus is monthly only.
  • Lives in more editors. Official VS Code and JetBrains extensions, and the VS Code extension also installs in Cursor.

Where Codex wins

  • You can start free. ChatGPT Free and Go ($8) include limited Codex in the desktop app; Claude Code starts at $20.
  • No five-hour cap at $100+. ChatGPT Pro plans currently have no five-hour Codex limit, only weekly limits. Claude Max still uses five-hour sessions.
  • Cloud features in the $20 plan. Plus includes Codex cloud tasks on the web and iOS, automatic GitHub code review, and the Slack integration.
  • A top tier for speed. Pro $500 adds Ultrafast mode for GPT-6 Astra and GPT-6.1 Sol.
  • Watch out: GPT-5.5 was retired from Codex with ChatGPT sign-in on Oct 14, 2026. If your workflow was tuned to it, test on GPT-6.1 Sol before you commit.

Verdict: who should pick which

Pick Claude Code if…

  • Claude Opus or Sonnet produces the code you like best, and you want it at a flat monthly price.
  • You already pay for Claude Pro or Max: Claude Code is included.
  • You'd actually use Max's monthly API credits, or want the $17/mo annual price.

Pick Codex if…

  • You want to try a coding agent for free or $8 before paying $20.
  • You hit five-hour limits a lot and are ready for $100+: Pro removes that cap.
  • You want automatic PR reviews, cloud tasks from your phone, and Slack hand-offs included in your plan.
  • Your team has a few heavy coders and many light ones: Codex-only seats have no fixed fee.

Honest caveat: "$20" doesn't buy the same amount of work on both. Neither vendor publishes a fixed message count, and usage depends on model, context size and task. Both plans can be cancelled monthly, so the best test is one real week of your own work on each. Since both read AGENTS.md, switching costs you almost nothing. Comparing an AI IDE instead? FAQ

Is Claude Code or Codex cheaper?

At the paid tiers the list prices match: Claude Pro and ChatGPT Plus are both $20/month, Claude Max and ChatGPT Pro both start at $100/month, and team seats on Claude Team and ChatGPT Business are both $20/seat/month billed annually ($25 monthly), or $100 ($125 monthly) for premium seats. Codex is cheaper to start, because ChatGPT Free and Go ($8/month) include limited Codex access in the desktop app, while Claude Code isn't on Claude Free. Claude Pro is also $17/month if billed annually.

Does Codex have a free plan?

Yes, a limited one. OpenAI's Codex pricing page lists Free ($0) and Go ($8/month) with GPT-6 Luna at Standard speed in the desktop app, subject to rollout. The full set of surfaces (web, CLI, IDE extension, iOS) and cloud features like automatic code review start on Plus at $20/month. Claude Code has no free tier.

Which has better usage limits?

Neither publishes a fixed message count. On the $20 plans both use rolling five-hour windows plus weekly limits. The difference is at $100 and up: OpenAI says ChatGPT Pro plans currently have no five-hour limit for Codex (weekly limits still apply), while Claude Max gives 5x or 20x Pro usage per five-hour session. Claude Max also includes $100 to $200 a month in Claude Platform API credits.

Can I use Codex or Claude Code with an API key instead of a subscription?

Yes, both. Codex with an API key works in the CLI, SDK and IDE extension at API prices, without cloud features like GitHub code review or Slack. Claude Code can switch to pay-as-you-go API credits through an Anthropic Console account.

Can Claude Code and Codex share project instructions?

Yes, through AGENTS.md. Codex uses AGENTS.md for custom instructions, including nested files in subfolders. Claude Code reads CLAUDE.md and can read an existing AGENTS.md in its place, so one file can serve both agents.

Which is better for teams?

Seat prices are identical: $20/seat billed annually or $25 monthly for standard seats, and $100 or $125 for premium seats with 5x usage. Claude Team covers 2 to 150 people; ChatGPT Business covers 2 to 200 and also offers Codex-only seats with no fixed monthly fee that bill against workspace credits, which suits teams where only a few people code heavily. Pick by which models your team prefers.
