Gemini CLI vs Claude Code (Oct 2026)

Short answer: for most individual developers, Claude Code is the simpler pick, because Gemini CLI no longer works with a Google subscription. On June 18, 2026, Google stopped serving Gemini CLI for free users and for Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers, and moved them to its closed-source Antigravity CLI. Gemini CLI still exists, still ships weekly releases and is still open source (Apache 2.0), but individuals now run it with a paid Gemini API key, billed per token. Choose Claude Code (Claude Pro $20/mo, $17 billed yearly) for a terminal agent on a flat plan. Choose Gemini CLI if you need open-source code you can audit or fork, your company already has Gemini Code Assist licenses, or you want pay-per-token Gemini in scripts and CI. Want Gemini in your terminal on a $19.99 plan? That is Antigravity CLI now.

What happened to Gemini CLI

  • May 19, 2026: Google announced Antigravity CLI and said Gemini CLI would stop serving consumer accounts. Its reason: users now want "multiple agents communicating with each other," so Google is putting its effort into one platform, Antigravity.
  • June 18, 2026: Gemini CLI and the Gemini Code Assist IDE extensions stopped serving requests for Gemini Code Assist for individuals (the free tier), Google AI Pro and Google AI Ultra. Sign in with Google no longer works for those accounts.
  • Still works: paid Gemini API keys, Vertex AI (now Gemini Enterprise Agent Platform), and Gemini Code Assist Standard and Enterprise licenses. Google says those licenses are "subject to a separate deprecation schedule" but hasn't published dates.
  • Still maintained: v0.65.0 shipped Oct 20, 2026, and the repo has over 107,000 stars. Google says it keeps Gemini CLI updated "with latest model releases, bugs and security fixes for our enterprise customers." Its README also says Gemini CLI "has not been optimized for Gemini 4 Argon" and points to Antigravity for that model.
  • The replacement is closed source: Antigravity CLI (command agy) is written in Go. Its GitHub repo holds a README, changelog, examples and a demo GIF, with no source code and no license. Google says it imports your Gemini CLI skills, MCP servers and agents and reads existing GEMINI.md files, but admits there is no 1:1 feature parity yet.

Heads up: some Gemini CLI docs pages, like the authentication guide, still recommend Sign in with Google for personal accounts. The banner on every docs page and Google's deprecation notice say otherwise, and we go with those.

On price, Code Assist Standard on a 12-month commitment ($95) edges out Claude Team annual ($100). Where Gemini CLI wins

  • Open source. Apache 2.0: you can read, audit and fork the agent harness. Claude Code and Antigravity CLI are both closed.
  • Cheapest per seat for Google Cloud teams. About $19/user/month on a 12-month Code Assist Standard commitment, with a published daily request quota.
  • Predictable daily quota. 1,500 or 2,000 requests per user per day on Code Assist, instead of limits nobody publishes as numbers.
  • Cheap Flash models for automation. Gemini 3.8 Flash is $0.75 in / $3.75 out per million tokens through Dec 31, 2026, handy for headless jobs in CI.

Where Claude Code wins

  • A real consumer plan. $20 a month ($17 billed yearly) covers Claude Code and Claude chat. Gemini CLI has no individual plan anymore.
  • Google's newest model isn't Gemini CLI's focus. Google itself says Gemini CLI isn't optimized for Gemini 4 Argon. Claude Code runs Anthropic's current models, including Opus 5.5.
  • More places to run it. Terminal, VS Code, JetBrains, a desktop app, the web and mobile, with sessions you can move between them.
  • Less product risk. Gemini CLI already lost its consumer users once, and its paid licenses are on an unpublished deprecation schedule.
  • Team extras. Claude Team includes chat, Claude Code and up to $500 a month in pooled API credits.

"Claude Code, Codex, or Gemini?" The three-way answer

  • Claude Code: Claude Pro $20, limits reset every five hours with a weekly cap, Claude models only.
  • OpenAI Codex: the same $20 on ChatGPT Plus, plus Free and Go ($8) tiers in the desktop app. Pro plans ($100, $200 or $500) currently have no five-hour Codex limit, only weekly limits. OpenAI models only. Full comparison: Claude Code vs OpenAI Codex.
  • Gemini: for a subscription, that now means Antigravity CLI on Google AI Pro ($19.99), which is also the only one of the three that puts Gemini 4 Argon and Claude Opus and Sonnet 5.5 in one plan. Gemini CLI is the pay-per-token or company-license route. See Cursor vs Google Antigravity for more on Antigravity's plans.

Verdict: who should pick which

Pick Gemini CLI if…

  • Your company already pays for Gemini Code Assist Standard or Enterprise. You have Gemini CLI included with a daily quota.
  • You need an open-source agent you can audit, fork or embed.
  • You want Gemini in scripts and CI and are happy paying per token with an API key.

Pick Claude Code if…

  • You're an individual and want a terminal agent on a flat monthly price.
  • You want the strongest Claude models in the agent and to use it from the terminal, your IDE, desktop or the web.
  • You're buying for a small team that wants chat and coding in one seat.

Pick Antigravity CLI instead if…

  • You came to this page wanting "Gemini CLI on my Google AI Pro plan." That product is Antigravity CLI now: $19.99 with Gemini 4 Argon and Claude 5.5 models, or a free tier. It's closed source and its quotas aren't published as numbers.

Honest caveat: nobody publishes how much real agent work $20 buys, so the only fair test is a week of your own tasks. Claude Pro and Google AI Pro are both month to month. Or let the quiz decide.

Claude Code

Start on: Pro $20. Start here. Includes Claude Code with usage limits; $17/mo if you pay $200 for the year.

Gemini CLI

Start on: Gemini API key (pay per token). Individuals since June 18, 2026: bring a paid Gemini API key and pay per token. Good for scripts and CI. Gemini 3.1 Pro Preview is $2 in / $12 out per million tokens.

Google Antigravity

Start on: Google AI Pro $19.99. Most individuals: quota refreshes every five hours up to a weekly limit, with Gemini 4 Argon and Claude Opus/Sonnet 5.5. Gemini 4 Argon and the Claude 5.5 models need a paid plan, not the free trial.

FAQ

Is Gemini CLI still free?

Not for individuals with a Google account. On June 18, 2026, Google stopped serving Gemini CLI for the free Gemini Code Assist for individuals tier and for Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers, and moved those users to Antigravity CLI. Gemini CLI itself is still free, open-source software (Apache 2.0), but to use it you now need a paid Gemini API key (billed per token), Vertex AI, or a Gemini Code Assist Standard or Enterprise license. Google's quota page still lists a free API key tier (250 requests a day, Flash models only), but Google's transition notes only promise access with paid keys, so don't plan around it.

Can I use my Google AI Pro or Ultra subscription with Gemini CLI?

No, not since June 18, 2026. Google says Sign in with Google no longer works in Gemini CLI or the Gemini Code Assist IDE extensions for Google AI Pro and Ultra. Your subscription now covers Antigravity CLI (agy) instead: Google AI Pro is $19.99/month and Ultra is $99.99 or $199.99/month. Google AI Plus was never supported in Gemini CLI.

Is Gemini CLI or Claude Code cheaper?

For an individual who wants a flat monthly price, Claude Code: Claude Pro is $20/month ($17/month billed annually) and Gemini CLI has no subscription option for individuals anymore. With API keys, both bill per token: Gemini 3.1 Pro Preview is $2 per million input tokens and $12 per million output tokens (prompts up to 200K), Gemini 3.8 Flash is $0.75 and $3.75 through Dec 31, 2026, and Claude Sonnet 5.5 is $2 and $10. For a team of 5, Gemini Code Assist Standard works out to about $114/month on monthly commitment or $95/month on a 12-month commitment, versus $125 or $100 for Claude Team standard seats. Prices checked Oct 22, 2026.

Are Gemini CLI and Claude Code open source?

Gemini CLI is: it's on GitHub under the Apache 2.0 license, with over 107,000 stars and a new release (v0.65.0) on Oct 20, 2026. Claude Code is not: its GitHub repository is public for issues and plugins, but the license reads 'All rights reserved' and use is governed by Anthropic's terms. Antigravity CLI, Gemini CLI's successor for individuals, is also closed source: its repository has a README, changelog, examples and a demo GIF, but no source code or license.

What's the difference between Gemini CLI and Antigravity CLI?

Gemini CLI is the original open-source TypeScript terminal agent, now for API-key, Vertex AI and Code Assist license users. Antigravity CLI (command: agy) is Google's closed-source replacement, written in Go, sharing its agent harness with the Antigravity desktop app. It works with the Antigravity free tier and Google AI Pro and Ultra, runs Gemini 4 Argon and, on paid Pro and Ultra, Claude Opus and Sonnet 5.5. Google says it imports Gemini CLI skills, MCP servers and agents and reads existing GEMINI.md files, but admits there isn't 1:1 feature parity.

Which is better for a team of 5?

If your company already buys Google Cloud, Gemini Code Assist Standard is the cheaper seat: about $22.80 per user per month on monthly commitment ($114 for 5) or $19 on a 12-month commitment ($95 for 5), with 1,500 Gemini CLI requests per user per day plus Code Assist in VS Code and IntelliJ. Claude Team costs $125/month for 5 standard seats ($100 billed annually) and adds Claude chat, Claude Code on every surface and up to $500 a month in pooled API credits. Google says Code Assist Standard and Enterprise are on a separate deprecation schedule, so ask your Google rep before you commit for a year.

Can I move my Gemini CLI setup to Claude Code?

Mostly by hand. Claude Code reads CLAUDE.md, or an existing AGENTS.md, so you can copy your GEMINI.md instructions into one of those. MCP servers need to be added again in Claude Code's own config, and hooks, skills and custom commands use different formats. If you'd rather stay with Google, Antigravity CLI imports Gemini CLI skills, MCP servers and agents automatically and keeps reading GEMINI.md.
