Claude Code alternatives (Oct 2026): who still gives you Claude

Short answer: most people looking for a Claude Code alternative still want Claude, just without the five-hour wall. GitHub Copilot Pro ($10/mo) is the cheapest way to keep Claude Sonnet 5.5, with the Copilot CLI as your terminal agent. Google AI Pro ($19.99/mo) and Kiro Pro ($20/mo) both include Claude Opus 5.5. If you're done with Claude, Codex on ChatGPT Plus ($20/mo) is the closest swap. And one trap: Amp's Claude Code mode and Zed's Claude Agent log in with your Claude plan, so they don't get you past Claude's limits.

Every price, model list and limit below was checked on the vendor's official pricing page or docs on Oct 28, 2026. Anything we worked out ourselves is labeled as an estimate.

First: why people leave Claude Code

It's usually the limits, not the tool. Claude Pro is $20 a month ($17 billed annually) and Max starts at $100. Usage runs on a rolling five-hour session window, paid plans also have weekly limits, and that usage is shared between Claude chat and Claude Code. Anthropic's pricing page says it may also limit usage "in other ways, such as weekly and monthly caps" at its discretion.

Before you switch, know your two in-house options: usage credits keep you working past the limit at standard API rates (Claude Sonnet 5.5 is $2 per million input tokens and $10 per million output), and Max 5x ($100/mo) gives 5x Pro usage per session plus $100 a month in API credits. If you'd rather not pay Anthropic more, read on.

Quick picks

  • Cheapest Claude in a terminal agent: GitHub Copilot Pro, $10/mo. Claude Sonnet 5.5 inside 1,500 monthly AI credits, and every plan includes the Copilot CLI.
  • Claude Opus 5.5 for about $20: Google AI Pro ($19.99) in Antigravity, or Kiro Pro ($20, 1,000 credits).
  • Drop Claude entirely: OpenAI Codex on ChatGPT Plus, $20/mo, with GPT-6.1 Sol in the CLI, IDE extension and web.
  • No subscription, no limit windows: Cline, Kilo Code, OpenCode or Aider with your own Anthropic API key. You pay per token.
  • Small team that wants pooled Claude usage: Copilot Business, $19 per seat ($95/mo for 5).
  • Free Claude: Kiro Free (Claude Sonnet 4.5, 50 credits). Antigravity Free's Claude 4.6 models go away on Nov 2, 2026.

The cheapest ways to keep using Claude models

Sorted by monthly price. "Medium tasks" is our estimate, using the same medium task as our usage limits page: 1.5M input tokens (90% cached) and 25,000 output tokens, which is about $0.69 on Claude Sonnet 5.5 at Anthropic's API prices.

Estimates are ours. They assume each tool passes Anthropic's prompt caching through at API rates, which no vendor promises, and they ignore cache-write costs. Your token counts will differ. Copilot math: a $0.69 task is about 69 credits, so 1,500 credits covers about 22. Prices from the sources in the table above, checked Oct 28, 2026.

The trap: "alternatives" that use your Claude plan

Some tools let you sign in with your Claude subscription. That's handy if you like their interface, but the usage still counts against your Claude limits, so it won't help if limits are why you're leaving.

  • Amp's Claude Code mode links your Claude plan and runs through the Claude Agent SDK. Amp's docs say only that mode uses the Claude plan, and Claude's plan limits still apply.
  • Zed's Claude Agent is an external agent with its own login and billing. You run /login and pick an API key or your Claude Code login.
  • Claude Code in Cursor or VS Code is still Claude Code, on the same plan.

What actually gets you more Claude: a different vendor's allowance (Copilot, Antigravity, Kiro, Devin Desktop, Warp, Amp's own credits) or paying per token with an API key.

Every alternative, in plain terms

GitHub Copilot

  • Switch if: you mostly want Claude Sonnet in your editor and terminal, and $10 beats $20.
  • Cost: Pro $10 (1,500 AI credits), Pro+ $39 (7,000), Max $100 (20,000). Extra credits are $0.01 each. Completions are unlimited on paid plans.
  • Claude? Yes. Pro has Sonnet 5.5, Sonnet 5 and Haiku 5.5. Opus 5.5 and Fable 5.1 start at Pro+. Also GPT-6.1 Sol, Gemini 4 Argon and others on Pro+.
  • You lose: Opus on the $10 plan, and Claude Code's own setup (CLAUDE.md, hooks, slash commands). The Copilot CLI and agent mode cover most of the day-to-day.
  • Skip it if: you run long Opus sessions all day. That burns credits fast; see our Copilot vs Claude Code math.

Try GitHub Copilot

Google Antigravity

  • Switch if: you want Claude Opus 5.5 and Gemini 4 Argon for one $19.99 bill.
  • Cost: Free; Google AI Pro $19.99; Ultra $99.99 or $199.99. Google AI Plus doesn't add Claude 5.5.
  • Claude? Yes on AI Pro and Ultra: Claude Sonnet 5.5 and Opus 5.5, for non-trial subscriptions only. Free loses Claude Sonnet 4.6 and Opus 4.6 on Nov 2, 2026.
  • You lose: a published quota number, and the freedom to use any tool you like with your login (Google banned accounts that used third-party tools in February 2026).
  • Skip it if: you're on a Google AI Pro free trial and want Claude. The trial doesn't include Claude 5.5.

Try Google Antigravity

Kiro

  • Switch if: you want Claude Opus 5.5 with a clear monthly credit number, in an IDE or CLI.
  • Cost: Free (50 credits), Pro $20 (1,000), Pro+ $40 (2,000), Pro Max $100 (5,000), Power $200 (10,000). Extra credits $0.04. Credits reset monthly, no rollover.
  • Claude? Yes. Paid plans list Opus 5.5 (2.0x Auto's credit rate), Sonnet 5.5 (1.3x), Haiku 5.5 and older Claude models, plus GPT-5.6. Free has Claude Sonnet 4.5 and 4.0.
  • You lose: plugging your subscription into other tools. Kiro's billing docs say third-party harnesses such as OpenClaw aren't permitted.
  • Skip it if: you need a team plan where seats share usage. Every Kiro developer needs their own subscription.

OpenAI Codex

  • Switch if: you're done with Claude and want the closest terminal agent from another lab.
  • Cost: Free and Go ($8) in the desktop app; Plus $20 adds the CLI, IDE extension, web and iOS; Pro $100, $200 or $500 has no five-hour limit (weekly limits still apply).
  • Claude? No. OpenAI models only: GPT-6.1 Sol and GPT-6 Luna on Plus.
  • You lose: Claude. OpenAI estimates 15 to 160 GPT-6.1 Sol messages per five hours on Plus, which is at least a number to plan around.
  • Skip it if: your prompts and habits are tuned to Claude. See Claude Code vs Codex.

Try OpenAI Codex

Cursor

  • Switch if: you want a full AI editor and don't mind paying per token for Claude.
  • Cost: Plus $8 (Grok only), Premium $30, Super $100, Ultra $200, Teams from $30 per seat.
  • Claude? Only on Premium and up, billed at API list price on top of your plan. It isn't part of the included pool.
  • You lose: any flat-rate Claude at all.
  • Skip it if: cheaper Claude is the whole point. You can also run Claude Code inside Cursor on your Claude plan; see Claude Code vs Cursor.

Try Cursor

Cline

  • Switch if: you want an open-source agent in VS Code or the terminal and are fine paying Anthropic per token.
  • Cost: free for individuals. Inference at cost through Cline, or bring your own key. ClinePass ($9.99/mo) is aimed at popular open coding models.
  • Claude? Yes, any Claude model on your key or Cline credits.
  • You lose: the flat monthly price. A heavy day can cost more than Claude Pro does in a month.
  • Skip it if: you want to know your bill in advance.

See Cline

Kilo Code

  • Switch if: you like Cline's style but want JetBrains too, or cheap team seats.
  • Cost: free and open source. Kilo Gateway passes through provider prices with no markup, plus a 5% processing fee when you buy credits. Kilo Pass is $19, $49 or $199 a month with up to 50% bonus credits. Teams $15 per user.
  • Claude? Yes, through the gateway or your own key.

  • Skip it if: you want Claude included in a subscription.

See Kilo Code

OpenCode (and Aider)

  • Switch if: you want an open-source terminal agent and will use your own API key.
  • Cost: OpenCode is free. Its optional Go plan is $10/mo and Go Plus is $40/mo, with monthly dollar limits per model. Aider is also free and open source.

  • You lose: any bundled Claude Sonnet or Opus.
  • Skip it if: you were hoping OpenCode Go was a cheap Claude plan. It isn't.

Warp

  • Cost: Free (bring your own key or pay as you go), Build $20 ($18 annual) with $20 of usage at API rates, Max $200 ($180 annual) with $200, Business $50 per user ($45 annual) with $20 per seat, up to 25 seats.

  • You lose: volume. $20 of usage is about 29 medium Sonnet 5.5 tasks (our estimate).
  • Skip it if: you need lots of Claude for $20.

Zed

  • Switch if: you want a fast editor and already have API keys or another agent.
  • Cost: Personal $0 with your own keys or external agents. Pro $10 includes $5 of tokens, then API list price plus 10%, and unlimited edit predictions. Business $30 per seat, no bundled credits.

  • Cost: Hobby $0 (buy credits at list price), Megawatt $20 with $20 of usage, Gigawatt $200 with $200 of usage. Teams cost nothing extra.
  • Claude? Yes, on Amp credits, or through Claude Code mode with your Claude plan.
  • You lose: nothing big, but Claude Code mode shares your Claude limits.

  • Cost: Free, Pro $20, Max $200, Teams $80 plus $40 per full seat.
  • Claude? Yes, Pro includes frontier models from OpenAI, Claude, Gemini and others in its quota, with extra usage at API pricing.

FAQ

What is the best Claude Code alternative?

If you still want Claude, GitHub Copilot Pro ($10/mo) is the cheapest: it includes Claude Sonnet 5.5 on 1,500 monthly AI credits plus the Copilot CLI. For Claude Opus 5.5 at about $20, use Google AI Pro ($19.99) in Antigravity or Kiro Pro ($20). If you want to leave Claude behind, OpenAI Codex on ChatGPT Plus ($20) is the closest terminal agent. Checked Oct 28, 2026.

What's the cheapest way to keep using Claude for coding?

Free: Kiro Free includes Claude Sonnet 4.5 on 50 credits, and Antigravity Free includes Claude Sonnet 4.6 and Opus 4.6 only until Nov 2, 2026. Paid: GitHub Copilot Pro at $10/mo has Claude Sonnet 5.5 (not Opus 5.5). Opus 5.5 starts at Google AI Pro ($19.99), Kiro Pro ($20) or Copilot Pro+ ($39). With your own Anthropic API key, open-source tools like Cline, Kilo Code, OpenCode and Aider cost nothing extra; you pay per token, about $0.69 for a medium Sonnet 5.5 task by our estimate.

Does using Claude in another tool get around Claude Code's limits?

Only if that tool pays for the Claude usage itself. Copilot, Antigravity, Kiro, Devin Desktop, Warp and Amp credits all come out of that vendor's allowance, not your Claude plan. But tools that log in with your Claude subscription, such as Amp's Claude Code mode, Zed's Claude Agent, or Claude Code running inside Cursor or VS Code, count against the same Claude limits.

Is GitHub Copilot a good Claude Code alternative?

For most people, yes. Copilot Pro is $10/mo with Claude Sonnet 5.5, Sonnet 5 and Haiku 5.5, unlimited completions, agent mode and the Copilot CLI on every plan. The catch is Opus 5.5, which needs Pro+ at $39/mo (7,000 credits), and a monthly credit budget: by our estimate, Pro covers about 22 medium Sonnet 5.5 agent tasks a month.

Can I use Claude Opus 5.5 without a Claude subscription?

Yes. Google AI Pro ($19.99/mo, non-trial) includes Claude Opus 5.5 and Sonnet 5.5 in Antigravity. Kiro Pro ($20/mo) lists Opus 5.5 at 2.0x the credit rate of its Auto mode. Copilot Pro+ ($39/mo) and Copilot Business ($19 per seat) include it too. Zed Pro, Warp, Amp and Augment offer it at API prices, with Zed adding 10% and Augment adding a 40% service fee.

Is OpenCode Go a cheap way to get Claude?

No. OpenCode Go ($10/mo) and Go Plus ($40/mo) only include Claude Haiku 5.5, with $15 and $60 a month of it. For Sonnet or Opus in OpenCode, use your own Anthropic API key.

What's the cheapest Claude Code alternative for a team of 5?

On published prices: Augment Standard is $20/mo flat for up to 50 seats but includes only $20 of usage and adds a 40% fee on model usage. Kilo Code Teams is $75 for 5 plus inference. GitHub Copilot Business is $95 (5 x $19) with 1,900 pooled credits per seat and Claude Opus 5.5 included. Claude Team itself is $125 a month for 5 standard seats, or $100 billed annually.
